Paystubz is proud to call Rapid City, South Dakota our home. And whether you’re here for business, on a road trip with the family, or just looking for a scenic getaway, there is plenty to do here in Rapid City. Here are five things we'd recommend if you find yourself in our neck of the woods.
1. Appreciate Mount Rushmore
Located approximately 30 miles southwest of Rapid City, the famous Mount Rushmore National Memorial features the 60 foot tall heads of four of America's most revered Presidents; Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt, who were selected to represent our nation's birth, growth, development, and preservation.
Carved into granite by Gutzan Borglum, the famous sculpture was once set to feature American West icons Lewis and Clark, Red Cloud, and Buffalo Bill Cody, but Borglum ultimately decided that the the four presidents would have wider appeal. In hindsight, we'd say that was the right decision.
2. Explore The Badlands
Less than an hour's drive east of Rapid City lies the mysterious Badlands National Park, a 244,000 acre swath of land that features some of the most unique and stunning scenery you'll ever see. Don't believe us? Check out the park's official Instagram account @blackhillsbadlands.
3. See The Wildlife
Spanning 71,000 acres, Custer State Park, features an 18 mile Wildlife Loop State Scenic Byway, where you're likely to spot buffalo, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, elk, deer, coyote, prairie dog, and numerous bird species including wild turkey.
If cold-blooded species are more up your alley, pay a visit to Reptile Gardens, which proudly sports the world's largest reptile collection. Popular attractions at Reptile Gardens include giant tortoises and a 16 foot long, 1,250 pound crocodile named Maniac.
4. Appreciate The History
Showcasing the history of the Black Hills region through four seperate collections: Geology and Paleontology, Archaeology, Native American Culture, and Pioneer History, The Journey Museum and Learning Center is a favorite of both locals and tourists of all ages.
Want to explore more of this region's ancient past? At the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, you can visit the Museum of Geology, where you'll find dinosuar fossil exhibitions, and preserved meteorite deposits, among other regional relics. Local Tip: Be sure to check out the flourescent mineral room while you're there!
5. Enjoy Downtown Rapid City
With plenty of hotels, bars, shops and eateries, downtown Rapid City has something for everyone. While you're downtown, you'll definitely want to pass through Main Street Square, which hosts live music, seasonal ice skating, and interactive fountains, among other fun attractions.
